Live Casino Guide: How Live Dealer Games Work

Real dealers, real cards, a real wheel, and a betting timer that waits for nobody. A practical guide to your first evening at a live table, from choosing a game to knowing when to log off.

Live casino sits somewhere between a slot and a night out. You're at home, but there's a person dealing the cards, a wheel you can watch spinning, and other players' bets popping up on the screen. For a lot of people it's the part of an online casino that feels most like the real thing. It also has its own rhythm, and a few habits that trip up newcomers. This guide is about those.

How a live table works

Each table is a real set in a studio, filmed by several cameras. The dealer shuffles real cards or spins a real wheel. The result is read off the table itself, by cameras and sensors, and passed to the game on your screen, which settles everyone's bets at once. Nothing is drawn by a random number generator: what you see is what decides the round.

Two consequences matter in practice. The table runs to its own clock, so the betting window opens and closes whether or not you've finished thinking. And your stream is always a second or two behind reality, which is why bets close a little earlier than you might expect. Don't leave a bet to the final second.

Which game to start with

  • Roulette. The easiest way in. Place chips, watch the spin, done. Pick a single-zero European table, or a French one if you mostly bet red/black or odd/even, as many apply a rule that returns half your even-money stake when zero lands. Avoid double-zero American wheels when a single-zero table is available.
  • Blackjack. The game where your decisions count. Look for tables paying 3:2 on a blackjack rather than 6:5, and learn a few basic strategy rules before you sit down: stand on hard 17 or more, always split aces and eights, never split tens, and turn down insurance.
  • Baccarat. Looks intimidating, but once your bet is down there's nothing to decide. Banker, Player or Tie; the drawing rules do the rest. The Tie pays well because it rarely happens.
  • Game shows. Crazy Time, Monopoly Live, Mega Wheel and the like: a host, a big wheel and bonus rounds. Pure entertainment, best treated as such.
  • Poker against the dealer. Casino Hold'em or Three Card Poker give you poker hands without other players to bluff. Quick, and often overlooked.

Choosing a table

A live lobby can hold hundreds of tables, and most are variations on the same handful of games. Four things separate them:

  1. Limits. The minimum and maximum bet are shown on the tile before you enter. Choose a minimum that lets you play for a while: a table where one bet is a tenth of your budget won't last long.
  2. Seats. Classic blackjack has seven. If they're full, "bet behind" lets you wager on another player's hand without making decisions, or you can join an unlimited-seat variant such as Infinite Blackjack or ONE Blackjack.
  3. Pace. Speed and auto tables run rounds far faster. That's fine for a short break and hard on a budget over an hour.
  4. Rules. Every table has an info panel, usually a question-mark icon. Thirty seconds reading it the first time tells you the blackjack payout, whether the half-back rule applies at roulette, and what happens if your time runs out.

The two studios you'll see most are Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live. Evolution's tables have a polished, traditional look; Pragmatic's are brighter and closer to its slots in style. Our international edition compares them table by table, and our Evolution studio review goes deeper on its catalogue.

Your first ten minutes

Open a table and don't bet straight away. Watch three or four rounds. You'll see where the chip selector is, how long the timer gives you, how results are announced, and where your balance updates. Then start with the smallest chip. Most tables let you repeat your last bet with one tap, which is handy, and also the button most responsible for sessions running longer than planned.

There's usually a chat box. Dealers often read it and reply; other players can see it too. Be polite, keep personal details out of it, and don't expect the dealer to talk about your account: that's what support is for.

Live casino on a phone

All five brands we review have an iOS and Android app that installs straight from their site, and the live tables work in the phone's browser as well. Full screen helps, since the video and the betting buttons share a small space. Blackjack and baccarat are the most comfortable on a phone; roulette asks for more precise tapping, which is where the "racetrack" bets on European tables come in handy.

A live stream is video, and it uses data like any other video. Play long sessions on Wi-Fi, and if the picture stutters on mobile data, lower the video quality in the table settings rather than putting up with a stream that freezes as betting closes. Our mobile casino guide has more on setting up a phone for casino play.

Bonuses and live games

Welcome bonuses are mostly designed around slots. Many count live table stakes at a reduced rate towards wagering, and some don't count them at all; there's often a maximum stake per bet while the bonus is active, too. If you mostly play live, read the game contribution line before you enter a code, or simply deposit without one. Our guide to casino bonus codes walks through the maths with an example.

Habits that keep it fun

Live tables are built to be absorbing, and that's the point: a good dealer and a lively table make an hour pass quickly. Decide your budget and your stop time before you open the lobby, not once you're at the table. Treat streaks as streaks, because the wheel and the shoe have no memory. And use the deposit limits and time-out tools in your account settings; our responsible gambling guide lists free UK support if you need it.

Where to play live casino

The five brands below all carry Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live tables. What separates them is the lobby, the welcome offer and which games they put in the shop window. Frequently asked questions

Is live casino rigged?

The result comes from a physical wheel or real cards filmed continuously, read off the table by cameras and sensors. You see the outcome as it happens rather than a number generated by software.

What is the easiest live casino game for beginners?

Roulette. You place your chips and watch the spin, with no decisions afterwards. A single-zero European table is the usual starting point.

What does bet behind mean in live blackjack?

It lets you bet on a seated player's hand when the table is full. You win or lose with their hand but make no decisions yourself.

Can I play live casino on my phone?

Yes. The five brands we review have an iOS and Android app that installs from their site, and their live tables also work in the phone's browser. Use Wi-Fi for longer sessions, as live streams use a lot of data.

Do welcome bonuses count on live casino games?

Often only partly. Many offers count live stakes at a reduced rate towards wagering, and some exclude them. Check the game contribution table in the terms before claiming.

What happens if my connection drops mid-round?

The round carries on at the table. Bets already accepted are settled by the result; the table's info panel explains how unfinished decisions are handled, which varies by game.

18+ only. Gambling should be entertainment, never income. Please play responsibly and read our responsible gambling guide.
